WHAT IS ACTING THROUGH SONG?
‘Acting Through Song’ is a technique used in musical theatre and performance where the performer doesn’t just ‘sing the lyrics’. This is something which is often overlooked when students are learning new material in their singing lessons. Sessions with Lyrica ensure that the performer’s vocal performance is not just technically sound but also emotionally engaging and deeply rooted in character and storytelling.
- Strong acting skills are key to a successful audition.
- The emotions, intentions and motivations of a character must not be overtaken by the song itself.
- This technique makes the song feel like a natural part of the character’s dialogue rather than just a musical number.
- It’s not just about hitting the right notes; it’s about using the voice to express the character’s emotions. This may involve altering phrasing, dynamics, and tone.
- Performers must understand what the character is feeling and why. Then they must convey that through vocal delivery, facial expressions and body language.

HOW DO ONLINE SESSIONS WORK?
We recommend the following:
- A good WiFi connection is key to an uninterrupted learning experience.
- You will need 2 devices. The first one is to FaceTime/Skype/Zoom and the second one is to play audio that you will sing along to.
- We also recommend using a speaker to connect your second device to. It can just be a small portable one so that you can play your music nice and loud.
- Good lighting is essential for your tutor to clearly see you.
- A space/room where you feel free to sing and express yourself without feeling inhibited during your sessions is essential.

WHAT TO PREPARE?
- One song (pop, rock, musical theatre, or other genre).
- A backing track. Lyrica can assist with sourcing backing tracks if you don't already have one.
